Two weeks ago I bought myself a PS3, but not just any PS3, I got me the Special Edition Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3. What does that mean? Different color, smaller hard drive and more money…basically. At least PS3’s have a user upgradeable hard drive, so I’ll probably bump it up to 160gb. Behold …

PS3 MGS4

It’s really a great system, and it could do so much. That’s where my problem is. I don’t have the stuff to take full advantage of it. By stuff I mean a display. PS3 if you don’t already know is a full fledged Blu-Ray/Game system. Blu-Ray is the next step of DVD. While DVD had the resolution of 720X480 pixels, Blu-Ray can display 1920X1080 pixels. That’s a huge leap in picture quality.

The TV I am using now is 10 years old and is 27″ standard definition (640X480). While it still looks….ok, it could be a lot better. So now I am on the hunt for a new display.

I have narrowed it down to 2 possibilities. One is a LCD computer monitor and one is a LCD HDTV. You might be thinking that choosing a computer monitor is a strange chose, but allow me to explain. The main differences between a HDTV and a computer monitor is a built in TV tuner. Perhaps HDTV might have some fancy smancy features, but when it all comes down to it, the TV tuner is all thats different.

So why would I choose the LCD monitor over a LCD HDTV? Resolution. Computer monitors typically have a higher resolution than your standard HDTV. Unless your buying a 42″ HDTV the resolution is going to be 1366X768, but a computer monitor can go way higher on smaller screens. Since this is going to be in a smallish room, a screen size of 28″ or 32″ is more than adequate.

The LCD computer monitor I am looking at is a widescreen 16:10 28″ LCD ViewSonic VX2835WM. This bad boy has a resolution of 1920X1200! I get aroused just thinking about that. It comes with 1 HDMI, VGA, S-Video, Composite, and Component connector. Like I said before the only thing missing is a connector for the cable. She sure is a beauty. Click the link above to get more info about this screen.

My second chose is a widescreen 16:9 32″ LCD HDTV by LG. The advantages of this screen is the size, a whole 4 inches, a TV tuner and a lot higher contrast ratio. The bad thing is the resolution size (1366X768). It does have a ton of connectors though: 3 HDMI, 1 RF, 2 Composite Video, 2 HD Component Video, 1 S-Video, Others, and a remote. Plus it costs about $100USD more. Looks good though.

So those are my chooses. I need feedback with this. Does anymore have more knowledge than me about this kind of tech or have a similar experience? I am adding a poll below and if you can just take a few minutes to check it all out and vote, it would mean a lot to me and my wallet.

    It wasn’t a choice but I would vote for the BenQ SH3741 TV if you are looking for a smaller size. Actually I would recommend the biggest size you can, cause 1920×1080 resolution is wasted on a small screen. I have a BenQ SH4241, basically the 42″ version of the SH3741 and even that I think is too small for HD sometimes.

    This is for a small small room, plus I don’t want to spend $40,000NT. I’ll look into the BenQ some more, even though the SH3741 is kinda ugly.

  3. James Lick says:

    You should be able to get the 37″ for under $30k.

    Can you get a connector for the Veiwsonic for the cable? if so I say go with that!! But I’m kinda a brand happy girl…. (find the one I like and stick with it ;) so far Nokia, viewsonic, Cannon and Olymus have my love)

  5. Frostfox says:

    @James - But can I get a 37″ that’s 1920X1080 for under $30k?

    @Magda - You can buy an external TV box and hook it up that way.

    Try some of the smaller shops to see if you can get a better deal. This is the shop we bought our SH4241 from for under $40k: http://tw.user.bid.yahoo.com/tw/show/aboutme?userID=qaz919321967&u=%3Aqaz919321967
