Interesting. He seems to have fallen into the “everything is simple present tense” trap. Then again, depending on what your school is like maybe he’s only learned that one tense and he really stretched to come up with “ate”. Is there much overt correction in your classes?

My school is horrible. It was recently bought by some woman and her husband. They changed the name of the school, and they have no idea what’s going on. I do my best to help these kids with what I have. If they make mistakes, I correct them and give them the reason.
The kid that wrote the story above is doing a lot better then when I first started. It’s a work in progress.

That sounds like a tough situation. I’ve been there. Do they have any sort of curriculum or set of books to follow at all, or are they pretty much just tossing you in the classroom and leaving it all up to you?

Recently we got the “Way Ahead” series and “Up and Away” series. It’s starting to get better, but it still feels like I’m on my own.

Oh, right on. I’m a huge fan of Up and Away. I’ve switched all my first and second graders to it.
